Filelocker Secure Temporary File Storage Solution

Filelocker is a temporary and secure storage system for sharing files and data. Filelocker allows faculty, staff, and students of the University of Michigan - Flint to share files with other people even if the recipient is not affiliated with the university.

Intended Audience

This Quicknote is intended for current faculty, staff, and students who are looking for a way to share files over the internet.


To follow this Quicknote you will need to have a current affiliation with the University and have access to your UM-Flint account.

Using Filelocker

Finding and Logging in to Filelocker:

  1. Navigate to in the browser of your choice.
  2. Log in using your uniqname and current password
    • The first time that you log in you will be prompted to agree to the terms of service for Filelocker.  It will look similar to this:

Uploading a File:

  1. Click on Upload
  2. You will get a prompt that allows you to put in an expiration date for the download link, notes, and to scan for viruses.
    • On the expiration date specified above the file will be deleted/removed from the server.
  3. After filling out the information in step 2 click Upload a file
  4. Select a file from your computer and click open.
  5. The file will be uploaded and added to the Uploaded Files list on the homepage.

Sharing an Uploaded File with Someone from UM-Flint:

  1. Click on the down arrow to the right of the file you would like to share in the Uploaded Files list.
  2. Click on Share This File.
  3. Search for the users you would like to share the document with.  You may search by name or uniqname.
  4. Click the checkbox next to “Search the entire University of Michigan – Flint directory.” to ensure you are searching the entire directory.
  5. Click on Share next to the name of the person you would like to share with.
    • Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have selected all of the users you would like to share this document with.
  6. Close the dialog box.  Your document has now been shared with the specified users.
    • Each user will receive an email informing them that this file has been shared.

Sharing an Uploaded File with Someone outside of UM-Flint:

  1. Click on the down arrow to the right of the file you would like to share in the Uploaded Files list.
  2. Click on Share This File.
  3. Click the Public Tab.
  4. Type the email address(es) of the user(s) you would like to share this document with.
Review the remainder of the options available for the password protecting the document.  Select the options you would like.
  1. Click on Share.
  2. You will now be given the link that was sent to those you indicated to share your file.  You may copy and save this but it is not necessary as it was also sent to those you indicated in step 3 above.
  3. Close the dialog box.  Your document has now been shared with the specified users.

Deleting an Uploaded File:

  1. Place a checkmark in the box next to the file you would like to delete.
  2. Click Delete at the top of the screen.

Creating an Upload Request:

Upload requests can be used to receive documents from other University of Michigan-Flint affiliates and non-affiliates. In order to create an upload request, please follow the steps outlined below.
  1. Click on the Request Upload button located in the right-hand column.
  2. Set a date for your upload request to expire.
  3. Address the upload request to your intended receiver using the Send request to email field.
  4. Optionally, you may use the Add message to email field to leave a note about what the request is for.
  5. At the bottom, there are some options you may want to utilize.
    • Allow multiple file uploads for this request? lets your recipient upload multiple files at once or over time up until the expiration date.
    • CC me with notification? sends the upload request to yourself as well as your recipient.
    • Force a virus scan for uploaded files? should be checked, for safety.
    • E-Mail me when files are uploaded? sends an email to your listed email account when someone uploads a file to your upload request.
    • Password protect this upload request? allows you to set a password for your recipient to use to upload files to your request.
  6. When you press the Create Request button, there will be a short waiting period before the system will do anything.
    • Note: pressing the button multiple times will send multiple emails.
  7. Once the recipient has uploaded a document, Filelocker will notify you via email, and the file will appear in the list of your uploaded files.
